What we did and saw:
A long day of driving. From North Lake Superior to North Lake Huron.
Stopped in Young's General Store in Wawa, a landmark, I'm sure. I overheard a white-haired tourist at the counter when told her bill for souvenirs: 'Is that in Canadian or American?'
Stopped to see the Terry Fox statue outside of Thunder Bay. I remember it used to be right on the side of the highway. They've moved it up into a park now. I guess it's safer (isn't everything), but it has removed the immediacy of standing at the side of the road, usually in the rain, and understanding that this exact spot was where he ended his run.
We stopped at a fresh fish spot just outside of the campground. I was hoping to get a few small trout to cook for supper. We met this crusty old fish-smoker who took us into his smoke house as he chopped up the fish. He sold as a trout alright, it was the size of salmon, with clear yellow meat. We cooked half of it (tasted great) and saved the other half for the next day. I guess they grow them big in Northern Ontario.
Chutes is a very nice park, close to the Highway, but not that close. It's named for the logging chutes that were used close by when logging was big in the 1920's.
There was a fire restriction on, but we were allowed to have a fire between 7 and 10pm in certain areas. We got in a bit late, so our fire was late and it wasn't out by 10pm. A forest ranger came by shorty after 10 to enforce the rule, which we weren't following. He said a satellite would be passing by in 10 minutes and it would register our fire and set off alarms if it wasn't out, so we quickly got water and extinguished the offending fire.
